Batting Types

100% Polyester

Batting can be used for hand or machine quilting and results in a puffier finished quilt.  It can be machine washed and dried without shrinkage.

Cotton/Poly Blends

Usually 80% cotton—20% polyester blend.  These blends machine wash and dry well with a 3-5% shrinkage. Excellent for hand quilting and machine quilting. Maximum Distance between stitches should be 4”, with an approximate loft of 1/4-3/8”. Excellent for both light and dark fabrics.

100%Cotton

For machine quilting, this batting has to be needle punched with a scrim.  You can expect shrinkage when laundered.  It comes bleached or natural colour.

100% Wool

More expensive than cotton and requires special laundering.  This batting provides exceptional warmth and breathes well.

Silk

Excellent for hand quilting and machine quilting. No shrinkage.  Maximum distance between stitches should be 4”, with an approximate loft of 1/4-3/8”. Excellent for light fabrics, however you should test with dark fabrics.  It is a lighter batting and more expensive than cotton & poly.  Do not put in dryer.

Bamboo

Natural fiber, chemical free with a minimum shrinkage. Similar to the cotton/polyester blends, however it is lighter and more expensive.  Maximum distance between stitches is 8”.
