Quilt Backing

· 100% cotton is recommended for quilt backings

· High thread count bed sheets or sheeting are NOT recommended for your quilt back.  The main problem with sheets is that the weave is denser than with traditional quilting cottons.  This can cause skipped or uneven stitches!

· Select a printed backing fabric similar in colour to the quilting thread to be used on the top.

· Wash backing, especially if you pre-washed your fabrics used in the top - you want any shrinkage to be even on top & backing, otherwise you might have puckering on one of the sides

NOTE:  Muslin backing generally has a high degree of shrinkage compared to other backing fabrics

· Make sure to remove selvages from seams if piecing the backing.  Sew with a 5/8” seam allowance using 12 stitches per inch.  Backstitch at the beginning and end.  Press seams open.

· Please cut your backing AND batting at least 4” larger than your top on all sides.  This allows for sufficient room for mounting on the frame.

· Cut the backing as square (90 degree corners) as possible.  Ensure that all edges are straight. (see below)

· Press the backing well—all backing seams should be pressed open.

SQUARING YOUR BACKING

· While standing, fold your backing fabric in half lengthwise across the center, so that the selvage edges are together.

· While holding the selvedge edges, look for folds in the fabric & begin shifting the top selvedge edge until the folded edge at the bottom is smooth.

· Lay folded fabric on a table and bring the fold to the selvedge edges to result in four layers of fabric, checking to see it lies straight.

· Trim off excess uneven fabric layers on the short edges using your rotary cutter and ruler to create a square edge.
